A Very Practical Plan

Start with setting two basic GOALS for yourself.

GOAL # 1: Build a peaceful life.

GOAL # 2: Build a stable life.

Here are some practical ideas to help you move toward your goals.  There are many professional people, online sites, and resources that can provide support with details.  With some research and organization, you can have a healthier lifestyle!

Get an EDUCATION.  Be a Learner!

1.  Go to college or enter a technical program to learn a skill or trade that will enable you to earn a regular, good income.

2.  Go to all classes, and be on time. This is part of building a strong, responsible work ethic.

3. Study and meet your deadlines.

4. Develop your technology skills beyond social media.

5. Develop a speaking “register” that includes good grammar and good vocabulary.

6. Eliminate from your vocabulary any profane language you heard as a child.

7. Learn about the world and current events by reading reports from multiple news outlets from the U.S. and around the world.

8. Expand your knowledge and fill in education gaps by learning about music, the arts, sports, business, finance, literature, history, economics, math, medicine, science, technology, editorials, opinions, and more…

9. Read from multiple perspectives. Don’t be afraid of diverse opinions and views - learn from them.

10. Practice your conversational and interview skills.


Take charge of your HEALTH.
1. Develop good self-care habits.

2. Repair teeth problems caused by childhood neglect.

3. Take care of your physical and mental health.

4. Develop good hygiene habits, and learn about nutrition.

5. Get proven, professional help for sobriety and an addiction-free lifestyle.

6. Get mental health counseling and support.

Take charge of your FINANCES and LEGAL DOCUMENTS

1. Apply for educational scholarships, grants, and financial aid; limit student loan debt when possible.

2. Balance your checking account. Keep track of your money, and learn how to manage it.

3. Pay your bills on time.

4. File your taxes on time.

Procrastination is not your friend. Open your mail, make those phone calls, schedule appointments, and take charge!  Don't depend on others to keep you organized.  Develop your own system (it can be very simple) and schedule time every week for handling the financial items in your life.

5. Obtain your legal documents - birth certificate, court orders, marriage license, divorce decree; official school transcripts, Social Security card; immunization and educational records; DMV vehicle registrations, passport. Organize and keep in a safe place.

6. Get the insurance you need (medical, renter’s, homeowner’s,  vehicles). Keep the policies and declarations in a safe place.

7. Save for emergencies.

8. Learn about credit scores and be proactive about checking your credit reports.

9. Protect yourself from scams and identity theft.

Take an interest in your Community

1. Volunteer.

2. Do jury duty.

3. VOTE!

4. Obey the law.
